Rift 1.7 patch includes many PvP changes

If you have not seen it yet, Rift 1.7 “Carnival of the Ascended” released last week with some pretty significant PvP changes. The changes included a revamp of the Prestige ranks from 8 ranks to 40 total ranks, where the total Prestige gained stays the same. Also added is a bolstering effect in PvP (level 50 warfronts) for players Prestige 13 and below. The last big one is a removal of PvP Souls and their replacement, Planar Attunement abilities for PvP. Slew of critical PvP updates and changes!

Big news on the PvP front for Rift. A whole slew of big changes are coming down in the PvP Balance Update. This update brings almost a whole revamp to the crowd control abilities and their diminishing returns. This will be a huge change to how the CC currently works in the game and I am not sure all of it is good.

The biggest change is the creation of crowd control groups, which after 2 applications of any of them in the group, will trigger a 30 second immunity to all CC’s in said group.


  • Root, Snare, Knockback


  • Banish, Disarm, Silence, Fear, Confuse, Mesmerize, Stun

I am only speculating here, but it seems like there is going to be people running around with immunity nearly all the time. Now, personally I like to play my character as opposed to the current CC in the game, which greatly reduces being able to play with all the CC chaining. But, this seems like overkill and I do not see it playing out too well as you lose all the strategy and tactics that CC brings to the table. I would like to see CC groups, but just smaller. For example “Stun+Silence”, “Fear+Confuse+Mez”, and “Disarm”. I really have no idea why you would put snares on a DR at all, that seems silly to me. “Root+Knockback” could be the last group as well.

In addition to the CC changes, we are seeing sweeping changes to the PvP damage mitigation, especially in PvP souls. Mitigation is being capped at 75% and the mitigation for each of the defensive PvP souls is being reduced significantly. According to Trion, the mitigation will stay roughly the same, although most of it will be through gear, and not souls.

The 3 souls being changed significantly are the following:

Templar, Archmage, Infiltrator

Those souls, at the moment, have huge damage mitigation they can spec into starting at Prestige rank 3, and getting even more powerful at Prestige rank 4 and up. I personally think these are good and needed changes. With the reduction in CC, having less damage mitigation means players will have to utilize their abilities rather then rely on passive damage reductions like they do currently. I am still skeptical however, how all of these changes together will play out in the real PvP world.
